Peter Gardner Hon Sen ROI (1921-2020)

Born in London, Peter studied at Hammersmith School of Art from1935 to1938, and from 1947 to1950. He also studied at the London Institute of Education, first in1951 and again in 1971. After achieving the Art Teachers Diploma (Ac. Dip) in Education, Peter taught art at West Norwood School and became Head of Art at Plaistow Grammar School as well as teaching at Fulham and South Kensington Adult Education Institute. Between 1949 and1979 when he retired and moved to Dorset, most of Peter’s paintings were of London, with particular emphasis on children playing and the textures of London’s buildings.

After moving to Dorset Peter became interested in the landscapes around his new home, painting many winter and summer scenes featuring hunting and agricultural themes. He also painted still life pictures, exhibiting in various London galleries. Compared to his other work these are typically smaller in size and are usually of fruits and vegetables.

A personal interest of Peter’s was religious imagery of the 14th & 15th century such as the Wilton Diptych and the work of Fra Angelico. His own works inspired by these styles have never been exhibited or shown.
