The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Mall Galleries are hosting some great events as part of this year’s annual exhibition.

Tour of the exhibition with Peter Graham ROI

Date: Thursday 25th November

A modern tradition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition is the guided tour by member Peter Graham ROI, given every year around the galleries.

Peter Graham ROI leads two afternoon tours of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition 2021. Join Peter Graham for a painter’s perspective on his guided tour taking a closer look at the finest oils from established artists alongside emerging new painters, exploring the broad range of styles and dazzling prize winners’ works.

Tour 1 – 1pm

Tour 2 – 2pm

Please note that each tour is limited to 20 people maximum and tickets can be booked on the Mall Galleries website.

ROI Paint Live Challenge

Date: Saturday 27th November (10am-5pm)

‘Piccadilly Flow’ by Rob Pointon ROI

Come and take part in the Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual Paint Live competition, a friendly and engaging event where you will have the day to create a painting within a half-mile of Mall Galleries. This area includes some of London’s most iconic places: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, Leicester Square, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park and Piccadilly Circus, as well as many smaller streets, squares, parks and views of the Thames.

There are great prizes on offer from the event’s sponsor Cass Art.

The Prizes

1st prize: £250 voucher for art materials donated by Cass Art, plus the winning picture will be featured on the ROI website and social media

Two runner-up prizes of £50 worth of art materials from Cass Art

The Rules

  • Meet at Mall Galleries for 10am to register your arrival
  • You will be provided with a 30 x 30 cm Winsor & Newton canvas board
  • You may bring a 30 x 30 cm support of your own choosing if you wish but it will need to be marked so as to confirm that the work is produced during the competition period
  • You may wish to bring acrylic colours for toning your ground ahead of starting work
  • Your subject must be within a half-mile radius of Mall Galleries
  • The competition is for work produced during the competition period and although we expect many to work on location this is not a rule and references may be used
  • A lunch break may be taken between 12:30pm and 1:30pm (we recommend you bring your own packed lunch)
  • You are welcome to speak to the judges and ask their advice during the break
  • Working resumes at 1:30pm and the work must be completed by 4pm
  • You may ask for a second canvas board for the second session if you wish
  • Judging commences at approximately 4:20pm with the prizes presented on completion before 5pm

ROI Paint Evening

Date: Tuesday 30th November (6pm-8:30pm)

Paint alongside members of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, with portrait models, wine, and mince pies. The Art Event Evening Award, a prize of £150 worth of Winsor & Newton art materials, will be presented to the (non-member) artist that produces the best painting on the night.

Attendees should bring their own sketchbooks and materials. Easels and boards will be provided on a first come, first served basis, so if you can bring your own, please do.

Painting Demonstration with Roger Dellar ROI

Date: Wednesday November 30th (10:30am-1pm)

Roger Dellar ROI will be demonstrating painting in oils, on the theme of ‘Theatreland’. Roger is a professional figurative artist who works in oils, pastels, mixed media, acrylics, and water based media. His interest in observing people in their environments has influenced him to record and interpret them, capturing light effects. He is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and The Pastel Society.
